Sarah and Silas were very tired. It had been a long journey and they were still not sure what their future held in store. Sarah sighed softly
and was about to suggest that they could all use a nap, when the elderly Gnome suddenly (and very slowly) awoke. He leaned over the crib where the
baby mice were sleeping and started to softly hum...   "And there's nothing like mice...they're ever so nice" "Guess That Cat won't be back, cause I gave it a smack" "Dum de dum, diddle dee...and now we are three..."
and he looked up into their faces and said in a rumbly-grumbly sleepy voice: "Well, I thought you'd never get here!" Sarah gave a little giggle and Silas just snorted. "Do we know you, Sir? he asked. "hmmm..." said the elderly Gnome, "Maybe not. But we're kin all the same, doncha know!" Now where did I put that fairy I found"... And he turned (not as fast as he once would have) and started for the mousehole entrance.  
Millie appeared in the doorway, softly shaking her head (and still tapping her foot...we were to learn that she did that a lot). "Grandfather Gnome found a fairy baby...I think it was lost when the Big Vanishing began...and he's always worried that he's misplaced it". She pointed to the nutshell basket. "Grandfather, the fairy is fast asleep. Now, what did you say about giving That Cat a smack?" Grandfather Gnome chuckled throatily: "Well, My Dear", he said "That Cat was just sleeping on the back step. Snoring even, it was. So I just went right up and ummmm..it wasn't so much of a smack as I kinda tickled it around the ears". And he fell back into his chair laughing. 
"Come along, now", said Millie softly, but firmly. "It's been a very long day for everyone; the babies have the right idea -- it's time for us all to
go to bed. Tomorrow is another day and we'll find a nice new home for Sarah and Silas. In fact, I think I have the very spot in mind" And with that, she blew out the candle and they all retired to bed.   Back to Chapter 4 .....
