The air was fresh and had that lovely green smell of an early spring morning. As the four of them crept
out through the porch opening into the early morning mist, everything was still and oh so quiet; not even the chirp of a single bird could be heard. Millie looked around and said in a relieved voice, "Good! there's no sign of That Cat; he's probably still asleep. Wicked beast prowls all night but he's not much of a morning cat!""Now, come along and I'll introduce you to my Cousin Fred. He's from the fieldmouse branch of the family and lives at the very back of the garden. He's usually out by the birdbath this time of the morning. Then we can stop off so you can meet the Blue Fairy. I'm sure she'll give us breakfast. I do hope you like bread and cheese". And chattering merrily ('cause she was a morning person), she led the way through the Tangled Garden until they came to the birdbath way down in the middle of the old yard. ![]() Grandpa Gnome
"Why, look", she exclaimed. "Grandpa Gnome and Fred are already here. "Hi, Fred" 'Morning, Grandfather and a good morning to you, Mr. Jay. I'd like you
to meet Sarah and Silas. They've come from the vanishing GOValley to live in the Big House." Just as she finished speaking, there was what seemed to be a little breeze rippling through the weedy, vine-covered grass. Silly (who hadn't had a chance to say a word up to this point) pricked up his ears and remarked
in a happy voice.."Well, I think
the Blue Fairy is here, Millie, and she's brought breakfast! She can tell them about the Story Lady, after we eat...oh yup, yup...let's eat!"![]() ![]() Back to Chapter 6 .....
