Silly wiped a bit of cheese off his whiskers and gave a satisfied sigh. Millie just tapped her foot and looked over to where
Grandfather Gnome had fallen fast asleep .... again. "Well", she said, "this seems like a good time for the Blue Fairy to tell you about the Story Lady". And she looked up expectantly to where the fairy hovered above the newest mushroom to appear after the spring rain. ![]() ![]()
"I've known the "Story Lady" all my life," said the fairy in a matter-of-fact tone. "She was the first Human
to ever speak to me....I must admit I was terribly frightened at first, but then I realized that if she could see me, then she must be very
special. Most Humans never see us, you know". She hovered a moment, then settled on the top of the mushroom. "That was a very long time ago," she continued in a wistful voice. "The Lady was young then and came to walk in the woods where I was born. She grew lovely flowers, just here...but they're all gone now and she's grown old, as Humans do, and the garden is left to us...and the butterflies". ![]() She smiled as a butterfly appeared, as if on cue. "Now the Story Lady has almost forgotten about us. She only comes to sit on the porch when the sun is warm and the days are long. She's almost forgotten about the magic. It makes me sad.
