The Unabridged firefly
Maplegirl under treeTree maple leaf

Maple tree, standing over me, can we chat for awhile?
I'm here at last, though the years have passed and I'm no longer a child.
I see you haven't changed so much. You're lookin' mighty fine.
A few more nests and what's this? Oh, yes.... those initials are mine!

Maple tree, do you remember me, among your branches so wide?
Climbing up to the highest point, trying to reach for the sky.
A little girl on those summer days, with spyglass, book and twine.
I'd sit up there by the hour and stare, making stories in my mind.

Maple tree, with such dignity, you'd show your colors at fall.
Reds and golds of so many shades, my arms would gather them all.
I'd rake them into a great big pile; my brother standing by.
When I was done, we'd start to run, kicking madly all the while!

All these days are burnished in my mind
Looking back along the flow of time
Simple days upside down
Hanging high off the ground
These are memories I hold dear
Of my life when you were near.

Maple tree, it amazes me, how far I've wandered and roamed.
I live among so much concrete now, my heart is aching for home.
I must admit it has crossed my mind to climb a tree or two,
And if I can find a little climbin' time,
You know that's just what I will do!
